In February 2009, the International Olympic Committee honoured SPORTFIVE by appointing it to sell the media rights to the XXII Olympic Winter Games (2014) in Sochi, Russia, and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad (2016) across all distribution platforms, in 40 European markets.
Harnessing the sports media industry expertise of its own professionals with the active support and involvement of the Lagardère Group, SPORTFIVE's agreement with the International Olympic Committee marks the first time that a sports media agency has been to appointed to distribute media rights to the Olympic Games.
In sub-licensing rights to the XXII Olympic Winter Games and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad to media partners via all forms of distribution technology within its European territories SPORTFIVE will drive revenues and margin and ensure that the broadest possible audience has access to coverage of the Olympic Games.
IOC President Jacques Rogge described the IOC’s agreement with SPORTFIVE as marking 'an exciting new era in the broadcasting of the Olympic Games’.
